Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the Germany's municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.

Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.

Police say they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.

The fluid had been applied in the form of a banned symbol, they added.

Police then located numerous other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.

Officials report preliminary tests indicate the substance was probably human blood.

"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any physical harm in relation with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the incident" and have appealed to the community for tips.

A senior political figure commented the incident rendered him stunned and required to be resolved rapidly.

"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing violent incident in 2020," he wrote on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of immigrant origin in five years prior.
